The Houston Rockets and Republic Services are teaming up for the Rockets Recycling Round-Up, an inaugural program to entertain and educate area elementary students on the importance of recycling in their homes, schools and communities.

To kick off the program and engage students, Rockets high energy mascot Clutch will visit 9 Houston schools, for an “edutainment” presentation on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling.

After the visit, the schools will compete for a two week period to see who can collect the most recycling per student. The winning school will receive:

•An awards ceremony, February 25 hosted at their school by Clutch and a Houston Rockets player
•50 tickets (25 students) to the Rockets Environmental Awareness Game presented by Republic Services vs. Toronto on March 1 where they will receive special recognition at the game
•A field trip to tour the Republic Recyclery including an educational experience on recycling
•1000 re-useable shopping bags

In addition to the program, all students at the participating schools will receive recycling themed giveaways from the Rockets and Republic Services and the opportunity to learn how to make their school and community a greener place.

“Republic Services of Houston is excited to partner with HISD and the Houston Rockets on this very important recycling initiative to showcase and support these great schools and students in their efforts to become more environmentally aware,” Mark Powell, Republic Services. “We look forward to a wonderful competition that will result in more recyclable goods and also begin a culture to help create a sustainable program.”

Gallery Furniture

Gallery Furniture to Hold Second Contest to Pick Football Champ

Gallery Furniture owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is once again asking Houstonians to tell him who they think will win the big football game and in return will refund ½ of their purchase if they pick the winner.

Customers that buy $5,000 or more worth of furniture, electronics, rugs, accessories or bedding at either Gallery Furniture location between January 19 and have it delivered by 5pm on January 24 will have the chance to pick the winner of this week’s big game in New Orleans between the team from Minnesota or the team from New Orleans. If the customer’s team of choice wins, they will receive 50% of their total purchase price back in the form of a refund.

Gallery Furniture hosted a similar contest for the college bowl championship game in early January, featuring the team from Texas and the team from Alabama. Alabama took the game, making winners out of customers who backed them. Over $540,000 in refunds were paid out at a party held for the winners this past Sunday at both Gallery Furniture locations, I-45 and Post Oak near the Galleria.

“We had a great response to our last contest with Texas and Alabama and due to numerous requests, we are doing it again,” said McIngvale. “As one customer put it ‘I get beautiful furniture in my home and may get half of my purchase price back. This is a win-win situation!’”

Gallery Furniture

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale will welcome hundreds of his closest friends, followers and fans to Gallery Furniture this Sunday, January 17 as he throws a party for his Twitter followers and Facebook fans and refunds over $540,000 to those who “backed ‘Bama” in his recent College Football Championship Contest.

Customers that purchased $5,000 or more worth of furniture, electronics, rugs, accessories or bedding at either Gallery Furniture location between December 31 and 5pm on January 7 were given the chance to pick the winner of this year’s college football championship game. Alabama proved victorious and now customers who chose the Crimson Tide will receive half of their Gallery Furniture purchase back in the form of a refund check on Sunday night.

The party begins at 6pm at both locations and will feature food from Post Oak Grill, special deals just for Facebook and Twitter and a first look at the all new Gallery Furniture website. Social media is a growing part of McIngvale’s marketing strategy and by throwing the party and offering specials just for them he hopes to create a value for those who follow his posts.

“When we first started with Facebook and Twitter, I wasn’t clear on how social media could help business,” said McIngvale. “But then I saw the power of the people on social media and that, coupled with traditional mediums we were already invested in like TV, radio and print, makes for a winning marketing strategy.”
